Unique library in Rotterdam Zuid with a specific focus on young people

On 16 September 2020, Queen Máxima opened the new Theater Zuidplein, which also contains the new branch of Bibliotheek Rotterdam (Rotterdam Public Library).

Offering a wide range of books, education, information, theatre and culture, Theater Zuidplein is a place of inspiration and connection: the new cultural heart of the Rotterdam Zuid district.

Located directly next to the Zuidplein bus and metro station, with lots of cultural, sports and hospitality venues in the vicinity, the centre is an easy spot for everyone to drop in.

Collaboration with partners and young people

Bibliotheek Rotterdam is increasingly focused on working with partners. In this building the collaboration with the theatre is immediately apparent, as the library blends into the theatre lobby. The library can also make use of some of the theatre’s facilities. Conversely, visitors to the theatre and café-restaurant can easily pop in to visit the library.

The library is also eager to involve young people in choosing programmes that connect with their needs and interests. Through co-creation programmes, its collection and facilities, the library aims to offer further opportunities to young people living in the Zuid district.

Soundproof

The new Theater Zuidplein has been designed to meet all sound requirements. It means that a pop concert and a book reading can take place on the same evening, without interfering with each other and without causing annoyance for neighbourhood residents. This way, this cultural centre can be located exactly where it belongs: at the heart of the city.
