Theme: "The Technology Behind Media Misinformation: The Creation, Detection, and Investigation of Fake News"
The Digital Humanities/Digital Scholarship Special Interest Group is calling for presenters to participate in their open session at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Dublin, Ireland, from August 15-20, 2020. This program is co-sponsored by News Media Section, FAIFE (Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression Advisory Committee), and CLM (Copyright and Other Legal Matters Advisory Committee).
In this session we will explore the technology behind deep fakes and other digital forms of fake news. Invited speakers will discuss these topics, their ethical and legal implications, and how these technologies can be detected and uncovered.
Possible topics may include:
- How does digital technology, such as deep fakes, contribute to the creation of fake news?
- How do information professionals confirm the validity of digital resources for their users?
- What do librarians and other information professionals need to know about the technical aspects of the creation and detection of fake news?
- What threat does the advancement of digital technology pose to the credibility of digital resources?
- What is the wider application, if any, of deep fakes as creative output?
- What is the role information professionals need to play in the future as these technologies become more prevalent?
- What level of technical knowledge should library users and information consumers have to be informed citizens?
