Theme: "The Technology Behind Media Misinformation: The Creation, Detection, and Investigation of Fake News"

The Digital Humanities/Digital Scholarship Special Interest Group is calling for presenters to participate in their open session at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in Dublin, Ireland, from August 15-20, 2020. This program is co-sponsored by News Media Section, FAIFE (Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression Advisory Committee), and CLM (Copyright and Other Legal Matters Advisory Committee).

In this session we will explore the technology behind deep fakes and other digital forms of fake news. Invited speakers will discuss these topics, their ethical and legal implications, and how these technologies can be detected and uncovered.

Possible topics may include:

• How does digital technology, such as deep fakes, contribute to the creation of fake news?
• How do information professionals confirm the validity of digital resources for their users?
• What do librarians and other information professionals need to know about the technical aspects of the creation and detection of fake news?
• What threat does the advancement of digital technology pose to the credibility of digital resources?
• What is the wider application, if any, of deep fakes as creative output?
• What is the role information professionals need to play in the future as these technologies become more prevalent?
• What level of technical knowledge should library users and information consumers have to be informed citizens?

Submission Guidelines

In this call for participation, the accepted proposals will help shape the session program. We are seeking presenters, and ask that you identify how you would like to contribute to the session and its theme (please refer to possible topics above). This may include: writing and presenting an academic paper or participating in a panel with other panelists.

All submissions must provide the following:

Please submit an abstract of up to 500 words.  In your abstract, provide a title for your paper or panel presentation, and outline your relevant qualifications and experience.

All proposals must be submitted by 25th March 2020, in English and as an MS Word attachment to:

In addition, all proposals must include:

• Name(s) of presenter(s) and position(s) and/or title(s)
• Employer(s) / affiliated institution(s) of presenter(s)
• Contact information including email address(es) and telephone number(s)
• Short biographical statement(s) of presenter(s)

Important Dates

25 March 2020 = Proposal abstracts due

8 April 2020 = Acceptance notices sent to authors

15 June 2020 = Completed papers and presentations submitted

Accepted Proposals

Accepted proposals must be submitted as an MS Word attachment to the committee members listed above, along with the following items, by 15^th June 2020:

• For panelists: 2 page summary of chosen topic
• For papers: Academic papers between 3000-6000 words in length. This must be an original submission not published elsewhere, preferably be written in English, and must use the template that will be available with IFLA’s 2020 Guidelines for Paper Authors and Presenters. If accepted, be prepared to present at IFLA WLIC. At least one of the paper’s authors must be present to deliver a summary of the paper during the program in Dublin. All papers presented at the WLIC 2020 will be made available online via the IFLA Library under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. Authors of accepted academic papers must complete the IFLA Authors’ Permission Form.

Proposals should only be submitted with the understanding that the expenses of attending the conference will be the responsibility of the author(s)/presenter(s) of accepted papers.

No funding assistance is available for prospective participants; the costs of attending the conference including registration, travel, accommodation, and other expenses are the responsibility of the presenters of the accepted papers, or their institutions.  No financial support can be provided by IFLA, but a special invitation letter can be issued to authors of accepted papers.
