Theme: "Metadata quality issues and policies"

IFLA Cataloguing Section (CATS) will be hosting an open session at the 86th IFLA General Conference and Assembly in Dublin, Ireland, 15-21 August 2020. The session will focus on benefits and challenges resulting from the integration of library metadata with datasets and services produced by other communities. Some of them may belong to the publicly-funded cultural sector (archives, museums, etc.), while others, such as content industry or fan communities, have their own specific areas of interes tor business needs. A shared environment enhances resource discovery and makes libraries more visible and relevant in a wider context, but also raises a number of questions, not least the one of metadata quality and trustworthiness. What is high-quality data in the age of big data analytics and data-driven economies? How can libraries leverage their public image of reliable and trustworthy information sources to remain relevant players in the information field? How to assess metadata quality in libraries? How can IFLA’s professional bodies assist libraries in adopting sustainable policies that will ensure the long-term quality of metadata? How can libraries use their metadata in addressing the problem of misinformation and fake news?

Subthemes:

• metadata quality strategies and policies – guidelines, best practice examples, etc.
• standards and methods for metadata quality assessment; their integration into library policies and workflows
• benefits and issues arising from the integration of metadata from various sources (cultural heritage domain, other domains, crowdsourcing etc.) – theoretical approaches, project reports, use cases etc.
• data provenance and sourcing

Language of the paper

Papers may be submitted in English or any of the other IFLA official languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Russian or Spanish) provided it is accompanied by an accurate summary in English. Attempts will be made to provide translations into other official languages.

Language of the session

The language of the session is English. Presenters may also give their talk in any of the IFLA working languages. However, simultaneous translation is not guaranteed; therefore, presenters are encouraged to provide the presentation slides in English to facilitate the understanding of ideas presented.

Submission guidelines:

Proposals must be submitted by email and must contain:

• Email subject line: IFLA cataloguing section call for papers
• Title of the proposed paper
• Author(s) name, position and affiliation, email address, and biographical note (no more than 150 words)
• An indication of the subtheme(s) the proposal addresses
• Paper abstract in English (500-700 words)
• Language of the paper
• Language of the presentation

The full paper (max 4000 words, double-line spaced) must be submitted no later than June, 1st.

Please note:

At least one of the paper’s authors must be present to deliver a summary of the paper during the program in Dublin. Abstracts should only be submitted with the understanding that the expenses of attending the conference will be the responsibility of the author(s)/presenter(s) of accepted papers.

The paper must be an original submission not presented or published elsewhere. All papers that are presented at the WLIC 2020 will be made available online via the IFLA Library under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.

Authors of accepted papers must complete the IFLA Authors’ Permission Form.

All expenses, including registration for the conference, travel, accommodation etc., are the responsibility of the authors/presenters. No financial support can be provided by IFLA, but a special invitation letter can be issued to author(s)/presenter(s) of accepted papers.
